The very day I finished reading the very engaging and magnificently written Jane Eyre I attempted to watch the this version of it. I was disappointed in how the story was made to look frightening and centered (it seems) mainly around Bertha Mason and Jane's troubles. The book took up more of Jane and Mr. Rochester's inner character but the Jane in the movie was weak and impressionable, easily moved to tears. But I also must take into account that the movie wasn't very long and they had to fly through it. Orsan Wells was very like Mr. Rochester for a faint moment (only a faint moment) but Joan Fontaine was....Joan Fontaine not Jane Eyre. If you are looking to a movie that has the true likeness and feel of the book do not watch this. From looking at movie clips the BBC version of Jane Eyre that includes Timothy Dalton and Zelah Clarke appears to be the best and truest to the story. I would also VERY VERY highly recommend the book! After reading and Austen or Bronte you can not be none affected.
